Trump Rejects Iran's Latest Offer to Reopen Strait of Hormuz
By Editorial Staff•Sun, Sep 27, 2026

President Donald Trump rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days and resume nuclear negotiations in exchange for a series of concessions from Washington.
Speaking to reporters Saturday, Trump said plainly that he was rejecting the deal.
What Iran Proposed
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Friday that Tehran had relayed an offer to the United States through Qatar regarding the reopening of the critical global energy chokepoint. According to Araghchi, speaking on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Iran's terms included lifting the US naval blockade on Iranian ports, waiving sanctions on Iranian oil exports, and securing a broader ceasefire commitment that would extend to Lebanon, in exchange for reopening the Strait and resuming nuclear talks.
Trump's Response
Trump made clear he had no interest in negotiating with Iran at this stage of the conflict, arguing that Tehran's willingness to immediately reopen the Strait reflected how badly the country is currently losing. He said the US maintains total control over the Strait of Hormuz and described the current trajectory of the conflict as strongly favorable to American interests.
According to a Wall Street Journal report citing US officials, Trump had already privately rejected the proposal before making his public comments. The same report indicated that Trump is considering renewed military action against Iran, potentially including a new bombing campaign, once the November midterm elections have concluded.
A Symbolic Gesture on Social Media
On Friday night, Trump shared a map of the region on Truth Social in which he relabeled the Strait of Hormuz as the "Trump Strait."
Why the Strait Matters
The Strait of Hormuz serves as a critical passage for global oil and natural gas shipments and has remained a central flashpoint in the conflict since the US and Israel launched military operations against Iran in February.
