A24’s “You Can See Everything” narrowly topped Warner Bros. and DC’s “Clayface” at the Friday box office, reinforcing its status as the must-see documentary, or film, of the moment.
The Elizabeth Holmes documentary earned $3.56 million on its third Friday from an expanded 3,243 North American theaters. Rival estimates project about $10.65 million by Sunday. It has already grossed $56.85 million in North America since opening October 16.
About the Film
Comedian Nathan Fielder and “Primetime” filmmaker Lance Oppenheim worked quietly on the movie for more than three years. It offers an unhinged look at the Theranos founder a month before she began an 11-year prison sentence for defrauding investors. Besides being eligible for best documentary feature at the 99th Academy Awards, the film will be submitted across the board, according to A24’s awards site: best picture, director, production design, cinematography, costume design, film editing, makeup and hairstyling, sound and original score.
“Clayface” Lands Close Behind
“Clayface” took No. 2 on its second Friday with $3.3 million from 3,478 theaters. The gory DC film has made $36.9 million domestically, and rival estimates suggest another $10.25 million by Sunday.
Directed by James Watkins, the film follows the Batman villain, a rising movie star also known as Matt Hagen (Tom Rhys Harries), who volunteers for a highly experimental medical procedure after his face is severely disfigured. Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan also star. Variety’s Guy Lodge called it “its own ugly animal,” saying that in the context of a single, genre-melding romp, its characters and conflicts are “fresh and ickily enjoyable.”
“Wildwood” Takes Third
Laika’s “Wildwood” placed third with $2.39 million from 3,100 theaters. The stop-motion film, with a voice cast including Carey Mulligan and Jacob Tremblay, is expected to add $7 million to $8 million through its second weekend, bringing its domestic total to $25.2 million before that addition.
Directed by Travis Knight, it follows a teenage girl who travels with a classmate into an enchanted forest after her brother is abducted. Strong reviews should keep supporting the film, which carries a substantial $100 million price tag.
“Wicker” and the BTS Concert Film
Black Bear’s “Wicker” took fifth place with $1.43 million on its second Friday from 2,374 theaters. It trailed the concert film “BTS World Tour ‘ARIRANG’ in South America,” which earned $2 million from 1,010 theaters. “Wicker” is targeting another $4.1 million this weekend, on top of its $13 million domestic total.
Described as an “audacious comedic fable,” it tells the love story of an ostracized fisherwoman (Olivia Colman) who commissions a husband (Alexander Skarsgård) from the local basketmaker (Peter Dinklage). Elizabeth Debicki also stars.
