Taylor Swift Surprises Fans in Dakota Johnson's "SNL" Monologue, Drops a Cleveland Nod to
By Editorial Staff•Sun, Oct 4, 2026

Speculation that Taylor Swift might appear on "Saturday Night Live" during Dakota Johnson's hosting stint proved accurate, as the two appeared together during the show's opening monologue.
A Surprise "Therapist" Reveal
After joking about her history of failed relationships, Johnson told the audience she has supportive, non-judgmental friends, introducing "my literal therapist." Swift then appeared on screen — in a moment one fan on X enthusiastically described as a "Taylor Swift jump scare" — quickly clarifying that she isn't actually Johnson's therapist. Instead, Swift described their dynamic as Johnson showing up weekly at her house with an empty wine bottle, flopping on her couch to overshare while Swift occasionally responds with a sympathetic "Damn, that's crazy." Johnson chimed in with an enthusiastic "Sleepover, yay!", prompting Swift to add that she typically sends Johnson home afterward with Pedialyte and a security escort.
Jokes About Johnson's Dating Life — and a Nod to Kelce
Earlier in the monologue, before Swift's appearance, Johnson joked about her outfit and the critical failure of "Madame Web," then reflected on her recent dating history, referencing public breakups with musicians Chris Martin of Coldplay and Role Model. She quipped that she was now "looking for a third." Tying her new film "Verity," described as a psychosexual erotic thriller, into the bit, she joked that dating musicians carries similarly unpredictable territory, adding that while some don't wear shoes and some are "terrible in bed," all of them end up in her DMs — joking that she tends to leave concerts not with merchandise, but with a two-and-a-half-year relationship.
With Swift standing beside her later in the sketch, Johnson continued the bit, joking that dating musicians is practically a public service, since it saves other women money on anxiety medication — thanking "America," "England," "parts of Ireland," and finally "Cleveland," a clear reference to Swift's fiancé, NFL star Travis Kelce. Swift replied with a quick "Allegedly."
Swift also prematurely announced "It's her birthday!" in reference to Johnson's upcoming birthday, which Johnson had noted earlier would technically arrive at midnight.
Hints Swift Dropped Ahead of Time
While Swift wasn't scheduled to perform musically on the episode, since musical guest duties had already been assigned to Turnstile, her appearance felt increasingly likely after she took part in an Easter egg-filled "Law & Order: SVU" sketch during the Emmys, which featured a not-so-subtle "Saturday Night Live" emblem visible on a bulletin board behind her.
A Connection Through "Patient Zero"
Swift and Johnson's on-screen partnership extends beyond "SNL." The two recently appeared together in the music video for Swift's single "Patient Zero," which Swift directed and co-starred in. The video, which premiered during the MTV Video Music Awards, features Johnson and Colin Farrell as a wealthy couple whose marriage appears to be unraveling, with Swift appearing as a ghostly figure attempting to warn Johnson's character about her husband's darker intentions, drawing from her own experience.
Earlier Saturday, Swift also released an expanded eight-minute version of the "Patient Zero" music video exclusively on Apple Music, sharing a link to the release via her Instagram Stories. The extended cut incorporates behind-the-scenes footage alongside the original video.
Swift's History With "SNL"
This marked Swift's first appearance in Studio 8H in some time. Her previous on-screen appearance came in October 2023, when she introduced musical guest Ice Spice, with whom she had collaborated on a remix. Swift's only hosting appearance came in 2009, the same year she also served as musical guest; she returned as musical guest again in 2017, 2019, and 2021. She's additionally made brief cameo appearances, including during a monologue in 2014 and a "Californians" sketch in 2015.
Swift's most recent musical release, "The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore," an expanded edition of her 2025 album featuring four additional tracks, came out September 25.
