Sets and the City: Why New York’s Film and Television Business Is Booming
By Editorial Staff•Wed, Sep 30, 2026

New York City’s film and television production industry is experiencing a massive revival, rebounding sharply from past slumps and capturing an increasing share of global entertainment projects.
According to data from Empire State Development (ESD), film production spending in New York surged 57% year-over-year in the second quarter of 2026, reaching nearly $1.06 billion. The resurgence is largely propelled by New York State’s enhanced 30% refundable tax credit program, backed by an annual budget allocation of $800 million, alongside streamlined municipal permit workflows introduced by the Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment.
Major studio productions—including high-profile features like The Devil Wears Prada 2 and upcoming installments of A Quiet Place—have flooded soundstages across Brooklyn and Queens. The Devil Wears Prada 2 shoot alone generated $67.9 million in total local economic activity and supported over 1,400 local cast and crew members, illustrating the immediate financial impact on local vendors, technicians, and hospitality businesses.
Facilities like Wildflower Studios in Astoria and Steiner Studios in Brooklyn report near-peak occupancy as production activity moves away from traditional hubs like Los Angeles toward tax-incentivized jurisdictions. City officials emphasize that beyond immediate wage creation, filming on location acts as global product placement, driving long-term tourism and economic growth throughout the metropolitan region.
