Rising Living Costs and $10 Gas Fuel Heated Alaska Senate Race Between Peltola and Sullivan
By Editorial Staff•Tue, Sep 29, 2026

Soaring inflation and astronomical living costs are turning political dynamics upside down in Alaska, making the high-stakes U.S. Senate race between Democratic challenger Mary Peltola and incumbent Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan one of the most competitive battles in the country.
In remote communities like Bethel, extreme isolation has amplified national affordability concerns. With gasoline soaring to $10 per gallon due to global supply disruptions, staple items like groceries and basic home goods have reached record highs. Peltola, a former congresswoman and Bethel native, has built her campaign around these economic pressures, criticizing spending cuts to public federal aid and positioning herself as a champion for working-class Alaskans.
On the other hand, Senator Dan Sullivan—who is seeking a third term—stresses his proven track record of securing federal investments, infrastructure projects, and protections for Alaska's crucial fishing and energy industries. Highlighting his legislative accomplishments, Sullivan argues that strong ties within the Republican leadership are essential for delivering direct resources back to the state.
Despite criticism regarding missed votes and workplace culture allegations during her previous tenure in Congress, Peltola maintains strong grassroots appeal, particularly among rural voters and independent blocks. With over 60 percent of the electorate registered as independents, both campaigns are fighting fiercely for moderate voters ahead of November, where affordability issues are expected to define the outcome.
