Oracle Expands Restructuring Plan with $700 Million Increase Amid AI Infrastructure Push
AUSTIN, Texas — Oracle Corporation has expanded its fiscal restructuring program, adding an estimated $700 million in expenses as the software and cloud provider adjusts its workforce while ramping up capital investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure. According to a recent regulatory filing, the additional allocation elevates the total projected cost of the company's 2026 restructuring plan from $2.1 billion to approximately $2.8 billion. The funds are earmarked primarily for employee severance packages, contract terminations, and associated operational exit expenses. AI Deployment Drives Workforce Adjustments The expanded restructuring plan follows significant reductions in headcount over the past year. Oracle reported reducing its global workforce by roughly 21,000 positions—representing about 13% of its total staff—leaving the enterprise software company with approximately 141,000 employees. In annual disclosures, management cited the internal adoption and automation capabilities of AI tools as a driving factor behind the organizational realignments: Research & Development: Approximately 7,000 roles eliminated. Sales & Marketing: Roughly 6,000 positions impacted. Cloud & Services Units: About 3,000 roles cut per division. Hardware Operations: Workforce reduced by nearly one-third. Capital Allocation and Infrastructure Strain The workforce reductions coincide with unprecedented capital expenditure as Oracle scales up gigawatt-class data centers to support compute workloads for high-profile AI clients. To fund the infrastructure expansion, Oracle aims to raise up to $40 billion through debt and equity financing during the current fiscal year. While the heavy capital deployment resulted in a negative free cash flow of $5.4 billion in the recent quarter, executive leadership pointed to strong long-term revenue indicators. Oracle's contracted revenue backlog recently expanded to $664 billion, with roughly half expected to convert into recognized sales over the next 36 months. The company maintains that streamlining payroll and administrative costs remains necessary to preserve operating margins while shifting resources toward core cloud and compute infrastructure capabilities. Why Oracle Laid Off Employees Despite Revenue Growth This video provides additional context on how Oracle's heavy investments in artificial intelligence data centers and infrastructure have impacted its financial strategy and driven workforce restructuring.
