For Lisa Lynn, performing has never been about staying in one place From theatre and musical performance to improvisation, directing, teaching and screen acting, the UK-based performer has built a career around creativity, versatility and a willingness to keep trying something new. Today, she is known not only as an award-winning actor and singer but also as an improviser, director, teacher, producer and the founder of Acaprov, a distinctive improvised a cappella musical project based in London. After graduating with a First Class BA Honours degree in Musical Theatre in 2009, Lisa moved to London and began building a career across theatre and the wider performing arts. Her experience includes live theatre, musical theatre, improvisation, directing, teaching and screen work, while her career has also taken her to international festivals and workshops beyond the UK. IMG-0059 What makes Lisa's journey particularly interesting is the range of roles she has taken on. She has performed, directed, taught and created new work rather than limiting herself to a single discipline. Her official profile describes her as an actor, singer, improviser, director, writer, voiceover artist, producer, workshop leader, presenter, entertainer and coach. From Musical Theatre to a Wider Creative Career Lisa's professional journey began with a strong foundation in musical theatre. Her First Class degree gave her the training to work across performance, while her subsequent career allowed her to explore different forms of theatre and storytelling. Her experience has included everything from classical theatre and Shakespeare to new writing and musicals. Over time, she also developed a strong interest in improvisation, eventually making it an important part of both her performance and teaching career. That combination of traditional theatre training and improvisational performance has become one of the defining features of Lisa's work. She discovered improv in 2015 and later moved into directing and teaching improvisation. According to her professional profile, she has been directing five-star shows since 2018 and has worked as a teacher, coach, guest director, workshop leader and guest performer. Her work has also taken her beyond the conventional boundaries of theatre. Lisa has taught improvisation at international festivals and has worked with performers in different countries, including teaching at the Diplomado de Impro in Colombia. Lisa-Lynn7069 An Award-Winning Performer Lisa's career has already produced a number of notable achievements. In 2015, she received The Stage Award for Best Actor: Ensemble for UKIP! The Musical. She was also associated with MacDeth, which received the Hollywood Fringe Award for Best International Show and an Encore Award. Earlier, Boiling Point received The Norwood School's Best Site-Specific Show award in 2013. Her screen work has also earned recognition. Lisa played the lead role in the short film New Year's Day, which went on to appear at several film festivals. The film received Best Film nominations at both Bucharest Shortcut Cinefest and the Birmingham Film Festival in 2019. Building Something of Her Own with Acaprov One of the most distinctive parts of Lisa's career is Acaprov: The Improvised A Cappella Musical. Founded in 2018 using a Nursery Theatre Original's Grant, Acaprov combines acting, singing, dance, beat-boxing, body percussion, freestyle rap and improvisation to create a completely improvised musical performance. Lisa directs the project and is also part of its performance world. Backline-Improvised-RAP-14 There is no fixed script waiting behind the curtain. Instead, Acaprov takes inspiration from the audience and creates a musical story in the moment. The company's official description explains that performances are created spontaneously from the minds, voices and bodies of the performers, making each show different from the last. The project has developed into a regular London performance, with Acaprov performing at venues around the city. Lisa's involvement demonstrates another side of her career—not simply performing someone else's work, but creating, directing and developing a performance concept of her own. More Than a Performer: Lisa as a Teacher Away from the stage, Lisa has also built a substantial career in education. She holds a Drama PGCE from Goldsmiths, University of London, at master's level, and has worked as a guest director, guest lecturer, supply teacher and head of Acting and Performing Arts. Her own website states that she has worked across more than 50 schools, colleges and universities in the UK. Her teaching covers a remarkably broad range of subjects, including acting, improvisation, Shakespeare, musical improvisation, a cappella performance and theatre techniques. Her approach brings together her experience as both a performer and an educator, allowing students to explore not only performance skills but also confidence, creativity and spontaneity Lisa-Lynn6456 Her professional work has even extended into corporate training. She has helped train doctors in communicating difficult news, worked with people on public speaking and pitching, and delivered team-building and confidence-focused workshops. A Career Still Moving Forward Despite everything Lisa has already achieved, her career is far from standing still. Her next chapter is particularly interesting because she wants to develop her work in scripted acting for both stage and screen, while continuing to explore the possibilities of improvisation. In a personal message shared with USA News Flow, Lisa explained that she is excited about returning to scripted acting and is also looking forward to upcoming improv projects.
“As a performer, I'm super excited to get back into scripted acting both on stage and screen.”
But she is not stopping there. Lisa also wants to explore the possibility of creating an improvised feature film that would be performed and screened live. The idea was inspired by seeing Colombian director Gigio Giraldo direct a live-screened improvised feature in Portugal. image At the same time, she has ambitions that extend beyond her own performances. Lisa is working towards bringing improvisation into schools across the UK and is also trying to raise funds to take Acaprov to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2027. Her plans show the same quality that has appeared throughout her career: curiosity. Rather than treating her previous achievements as an endpoint, Lisa appears to see each new project as another opportunity to experiment, learn and create. Looking Beyond the Next Performance For Lisa, improvisation is not simply a form of comedy. It has become a way of thinking about performance, education and collaboration. Her work brings together theatre training, musical performance, spontaneous storytelling and teaching. That combination has allowed her to work with different performers, students and audiences across the UK and internationally. 624108896-10225212761624659-6227740184546680665-n Her ambition to introduce improvisation to more schools also points towards something larger than a personal career goal. It reflects her belief in the value of creativity and confidence-building through performance. At the same time, her desire to return to scripted acting shows that Lisa is still interested in developing as a performer in more traditional theatre and screen environments. That balance—between structured acting and spontaneous improvisation—is perhaps what makes her career particularly distinctive. What Comes Next for Lisa Lynn? For an artist who has already worked across theatre, musical performance, improvisation, education and directing, the next chapter could take Lisa in several different directions. She wants to return to scripted acting on stage and screen. She wants to continue performing and directing improv. She wants to explore live improvised film. She wants to bring improv into schools across the UK. And she hopes to take Acaprov to the Edinburgh Fringe in 2027. Most importantly, she is still creating. As Lisa puts it herself
“Improv wise I look forward to the Cambridge and Pretend Company Improvathons, and I want to work towards improvising a feature film.”
Her ambitions do not end with performing, either. She is also working towards making improvisation more accessible to young people across the UK. And when it comes to Acaprov, her ambition is equally clear: she wants to raise the funds needed to finally bring the project to Edinburgh Fringe in 2027. Her final words on her future plans perhaps capture her personality better than any biography could:
“Let's go!!!”
For Lisa Lynn, the next chapter is already beginning. And if her career so far is any indication, there are likely to be plenty more stories, performances and unexpected moments still to come.
