ROME — Italian public broadcaster RAI has secured a package of high-profile international drama series from distributor Beta Film ahead of the Mipcom television market. The deal highlights the continued dominance of European public broadcasters in driving major scripted content acquisitions despite tightening industry budgets.
The acquired lineup features three female-led series produced in collaboration with leading international partners, including France Télévisions and Germany’s ARD.
Key Acquisitions in the Deal:
Barton Vet (12 Episodes): A US-Canadian procedural drama starring Georgina Reilly (Quantum Leap, City on a Hill) as Dr. Kate Barton. Directed by Felipe Rodriguez (Virgin River, The Good Doctor), the series follows a veterinarian taking over her family's rural clinic following her father's death. The show is produced by Shaftesbury in association with BYUtv and Beta Film.
A Guilty Affair (4 Episodes): A French thriller starring Hélène de Fougerolles (Balthazar) as a high school principal investigating the mysterious disappearance of her daughter. Directed by Sandra Perrin, the series is co-produced by France Télévisions, Episode Productions, Be-Films, and RTBF.
Mozart Mozart (6 Episodes): Set in 1780s Vienna, this German period drama offers a modern reimagining of the Mozart family legacy. The story centers on Maria Anna Mozart (played by Havana Joy Josephine Braun), the gifted sister of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who secretly performs under her brother's name to save the family's standing. Produced by Story House Pictures in co-production with ARD, ORF, and Dreaming Sheep Company, world sales are co-handled by Beta Film and Bavaria Media.
Industry analysts note that RAI’s latest acquisitions demonstrate how European public networks continue to collaborate on major co-productions to secure premium primetime programming for linear and streaming platforms.
