"Imperfect Women" has been renewed for a second season at Apple TV, Variety has learned, with Season 1 lead Kerry Washington returning to headline the new installment.
A New Direction for Season 2
While the first season was based on the novel of the same name by Araminta Hall, Season 2 will follow an original story built specifically around Washington's character. "Imperfect Women" premiered on Apple TV in March, with Season 1 also starring Elisabeth Moss and Kate Mara. Moss's production company, Love & Squalor Pictures, originally optioned the book for television development.
Annie Weisman, who served as writer and showrunner for Season 1, will return for the second season as co-showrunner alongside Justin Hillian. According to the official logline, Season 2 follows Washington's character, Eleanor, as she returns to her hometown roots in the affluent Black enclave of Martha's Vineyard, only to discover that beneath its idyllic surface lie secrets and scandals threatening to upend everything she thought she knew about her past.
Washington on Returning to the Role
Washington expressed excitement about reprising the role, saying she was thrilled by how deeply audiences around the world connected with the characters and their stories in Season 1. She described Eleanor as intelligent and strong while also navigating complicated, sometimes messy situations, adding that she and her team at Simpson Street, alongside partners at Apple and Love & Squalor Pictures, are eager to explore this new chapter and see where the story goes next.
About the New Co-Showrunner
Hillian most recently served as co-showrunner on the Showtime series "The Chi." His other credits include FX's "Snowfall" and Showtime's "I'm Dying Up Here." He is represented by WME, 3 Arts, and Yorn Levine.
Apple's Perspective on the Renewal
Matt Cherniss, Apple TV's head of programming, said that after a well-received first season driven by the performances of Washington, Moss, and Mara, the opportunity to expand the "Imperfect Women" world through Washington's fan-favorite character, Eleanor, was one the team eagerly pursued. He described Weisman and Hillian's new story as an exciting and natural next chapter, adding that the team is looking forward to fans experiencing it.
Production Details
Weisman and Hillian serve as creators, co-showrunners, and executive producers on Season 2. Washington executive produces through Simpson Street alongside Pilar Savone, while Moss and Lindsey McManus executive produce through Love & Squalor. The series is produced by 20th Television and Apple Studios.
