EU to Pursue Global AI Safety Regulations Despite US Opposition from Trump
The European Commission has reaffirmed its commitment to establishing international frameworks for artificial intelligence security, standing firm despite strong pushback from the United States. Speaking at the RAID Conference in Brussels, EU tech chief Henna Virkkunen emphasized that establishing global guardrails remains essential for building public trust and promoting responsible innovation. The divergence in policy highlights growing ideological differences between Washington and Brussels. While U.S. President Donald Trump has dismissed extreme existential AI risk concerns as overstated and opposed restrictive international mandates on tech development, the European Union is actively backing efforts to institute global monitoring bodies. The EU recently lent its support to a international safety initiative spearheaded by Finland and Norway, which has already been joined by more than 20 countries. Addressing concerns that governance might stifle tech advancements, Virkkunen argued that a pro-innovation regulatory foundation provides the stability necessary for long-term growth. She pointed to the landmark 2024 European AI Act as a strong model for tackling emerging challenges, including rogue AI behaviors, system deception, and unauthorized code generation. With safety concerns escalating across the tech sector, major developers like OpenAI and Anthropic have faced heightened scrutiny regarding the safe deployment of advanced models. European officials maintain that dialogue within international forums like the G7 must continue, stressing that international cooperation among national AI safety institutions is critical to managing risks without halting technological progress.
