Coroner Rules Hayden Panettiere's Death an Accidental Fentanyl Overdose

Actress Hayden Panettiere died from the toxic effects of fentanyl and other substances, according to a ruling issued Tuesday by the Greenville County Coroner's Office in South Carolina, which classified her death as accidental.
Panettiere, known for her roles in "Heroes" and "Nashville," was pronounced dead at a Greenville apartment on August 16. Responding medics found the 36-year-old in cardiac arrest after a 911 call and were unable to revive her.
The coroner's office listed the cause of death as the toxic effects of fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol, and quetiapine.
A Broader Pattern Tied to Fentanyl
Fentanyl and other synthetic opioids are involved in more than half of all overdose deaths in the United States, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While overall overdose deaths have declined significantly in recent years, the most recent provisional data show synthetic opioids were still linked to more than 35,000 deaths nationwide over the past year.
Investigation Into Possible Criminal Responsibility Continues
Although authorities have ruled Panettiere's death accidental, investigators are continuing to examine whether anyone could be held criminally responsible for supplying her with a lethal substance.
A source familiar with the case said Drug Enforcement Administration agents and Los Angeles-area authorities have questioned multiple people connected to the circumstances surrounding her death. Investigators are specifically looking into whether Panettiere may have taken a counterfeit narcotic that interacted with other substances already in her system.
In a statement to CNN following the coroner's report, Panettiere's representative, Kasey Kitchen, said the investigation remains ongoing and the circumstances are complex, asking for patience as the process continues.
A Public Battle With Mental Health and Addiction
Panettiere had spoken openly in the past about her struggles with mental health and substance use, including postpartum depression, which affected her in her young adult years and temporarily paused a career that began before she was even a year old.
This year, she addressed those struggles further in a memoir and spoke publicly about the loss of her brother. Her career appeared to be regaining momentum, with her most recent film released in January.
Her sudden death sent shockwaves through Hollywood and beyond, including in Ukraine, where her ex-partner, former Olympic and world boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko, paid tribute to her and pledged to ensure their daughter Kaya would always remember her mother.
What Happened the Day of Her Death
According to the coroner's office, Panettiere had been temporarily staying at the Greenville apartment where she died, though authorities did not disclose whose residence it was. A Greenville police incident report said her boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, and his brother Zach called 911 on the afternoon of August 16 after finding her unresponsive. The brothers were questioned separately at the scene, and Brian Hickerson provided police with a bag of Panettiere's medications, according to the report.
The Hickerson brothers have family ties to the Greenville area, though the report noted Brian Hickerson lived in California and Zach Hickerson lived in Georgia.
A Larger Conversation About Fame and Mental Health
Panettiere's death, combined with revelations from her recently published memoir, has renewed public attention on the pressures of growing up in the entertainment industry. Her story has prompted other former child stars to speak more openly about the challenges and struggles that often accompany early fame.
