BUSAN — The Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) launched its 31st edition with an star-studded opening ceremony, welcoming global cinema icons including Fan Bingbing, Michelle Yeoh, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Alfonso Cuarón, and Kore-eda Hirokazu to South Korea's coastal cinema hub. Busan Mayor Park Chun Jae-soo formally declared the festival open, delivering his inaugural opening-night address as mayor. Festival Director Jung Hanseok framed this year's edition around a central question: "What does Busan call a good film?" The inquiry yielded 13 competition titles selected from thousands of international submissions. Notably, BIFF remains the only festival in Asia whose competition Grand Prize winner automatically qualifies for Academy Award consideration in the International Feature Film category. Renowned filmmaker Zhang Yimou serves as Jury President for the main competition, leading a seven-member panel featuring Chinese director Bi Gan, Japanese director Kei Ishikawa, South Korean actor Moon Choi, South Korean director July Jung, Vietnamese producer Tran Thi Bich Ngoc, and Kazakh actor Samal Yeslyamova. Addressing the crowd, Zhang reflected on the evolving landscape of cinema in the era of artificial intelligence and digital democratization, emphasizing the role of hard work and luck in filmmaking. Major Honors and Award Recipients: Asian Filmmaker of the Year: Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh received the prestigious honor, introduced by South Korean actor Choi Min-sik. In her acceptance speech, Yeoh celebrated cinema's power to bridge Eastern and Western cultures and paid tribute to fellow honorees. Camellia Award: Pioneer Hong Kong filmmaker Ann Hui was honored with the Camellia Award, established by BIFF in partnership with Chanel to recognize trailblazing women in cinema. Korean Cinema Award: Festival co-founder Kim Dong-ho received the Korean Cinema Award in recognition of his 31-year legacy, including his pivotal role in eliminating film censorship during BIFF's inaugural edition in 1996. The opening night red carpet featured notable appearances by Lee Jung-jae, director Lee Chang-dong with the cast of his latest feature "Possible Love", Fukada Koji, and Dileesh Pothen. The ceremony was hosted by "Pachinko" star Kim Minha, whose new film "The Table: Day and Night" serves as the festival's opening selection. The 31st Busan International Film Festival runs through October 15.
