Automattic Interim CFO Leaves Role Following Major Boardroom Shakeup

SAN FRANCISCO — Executive instability continues to ripple through Automattic, the parent company behind WordPress.com and WooCommerce, following the rapid departure of interim Chief Financial Officer Jeremy Klaperman after less than four weeks in the role. Klaperman's sudden exit marks the latest leadership shift inside the web technology giant, coming right on the heels of a dramatic boardroom confrontation that led to the complete dissolution of Automattic's previous board of directors
Klaperman originally stepped up from his post as CFO of Automattic’s VIP Enterprise division to assume the broader interim finance role last month. His promotion
followed the departure of former CFO Mark Davies, who briefly served as acting chief executive during an unsuccessful attempt by board members to place founder and CEO Matt Mullenweg on leave.
Mullenweg quickly reclaimed control of the company within 33 hours, leading to reciprocal severance agreements for both Davies and Chief Legal Officer Andy Missan. Following the dispute, Mullenweg purged the existing board and appointed a fresh slate of directors, including sci-fi author Hugh Howey and tech entrepreneurs Henry Khachatryan and Krutal Desai
While Automattic acknowledged Klaperman’s service and expressed gratitude for his guidance, the company declined to comment on the specific circumstances behind his departure. Internal reports suggest Klaperman opted to leave after being reassigned back to his original VIP Enterprise division, rather than transitioning into a permanent executive position. The executive change leaves Automattic searching for a permanent financial head during a period of major structural realignment. Internal communications indicate that Mullenweg previously reassured staff regarding the company's financial stability and cash position as leadership works to fill key permanent roles.
